The
SKUD 18 is a ballasted Skiff designed
by Bethwaite/Mitchell in Australia. It
is one of the first Skiffs with a keel
and combines non-physical sailing with
quick dinghy-caracteristics. For the Paralympic
regatta both sailors are stationary in
the centre line of the boat and will reach
15 knots speeds on windy days. It carries
35 m² sail area with the assymetrical
spinnaker up and draws 1.7 m with a 150
kg lead bulb at the bottom of the retractable
centreboard fin.
This is Gustaf's fourth Paralympic Sailing campaign. At the three previous Games he sailed in the three person event, the Sonar, finishing fourth in both Atlanta and Sydney. Gustaf is the only athlete using av wheelchair who has won an open Worldchampionship when he, 1995, won the 2.4 Metre Worlds. 2004 he won the Two-person IFDS Worlds together with Aron Andersson, 2006 Gold at the Europeans and 2007 bronze at the Worlds in SKUD 18, for sailors with disabilities, together with former crew Annika Lindgren.
Birgitta Jacobsson has crewed for Gustaf since January. She has been sailing with her family several years and has got some experience from racing the 2.4 Metre.
Hon har en lång karriär som programchef på Sveriges Radio P1 och tar nu tjänstledigt för att kunna intensivträna och på så kort tid komma upp till den nivå som krävs för att ta Paralympic-medalj i Kina.
